5 Easy Cleaning Tips for Blinds and Windows

September 10th, 2021

We all know that clean windows can transform a space – letting in more natural light and instantly lifting the look of a room. But it's not just the glass that needs attention. Your window blinds, especially delicate styles like Duette® blinds, deserve just as much care. Regular cleaning keeps them looking pristine and ensures they continue to perform at their best, helping with insulation and light control.

In this article, we share five practical and gentle cleaning tips – clearly separated into advice for your Duette® blinds and your windows – so your space stays effortlessly stylish and sparkling clean.

  1. Dust Gently and Regularly

Dust is the number one culprit for tired-looking blinds. A soft and frequent clean can make a big difference.

  • For fabric blinds like Duette® or Roman styles, use the brush attachment on your vacuum on the lowest setting
  • Gently sweep across the surface, following the direction of the pleats or folds
  • Avoid pressing too firmly to prevent damaging the structure or fabric

If you don’t have a vacuum with a soft brush, a microfibre cloth or feather duster works well. For horizontal slats like those on Venetian blinds, try a dry cloth or a purpose-made blind duster that cleans both sides at once.

  1. Remove Marks Without Over-Wetting

If you spot a smudge or stain, avoid soaking the blind. Too much water can distort the fabric or damage metal or wood finishes.

  • Lightly dab the area with a clean cloth dipped in a mild soapy solution
  • Gently blot rather than rub
  • For fabric blinds, let them air dry fully while extended

Be especially cautious with blackout fabrics or those with special coatings like thermal or reflective layers. Always check the manufacturer’s care instructions if in doubt.

  1. Choose the Right Glass Cleaner

It might be tempting to reach for vinegar or newspaper, but those old methods can leave residue or cause streaks. Instead, try this approach:

  • Mix a few drops of dish soap with warm water or use a commercial glass cleaner
  • Apply using a soft microfibre cloth or a squeegee
  • Wipe in circular motions and then dry with a clean towel

This method works for most modern windows and helps keep the view clear without streaks or spots.

  1. Don’t Skip the Frames

Frames often gather dust and grime, especially around hinges or behind blinds where airflow is limited.

  • Use warm soapy water and a soft cloth to clean around the edges
  • An old toothbrush can help reach into corners or crevices
  • Dry the area thoroughly to avoid water marks or mould developing

This is particularly important in bathrooms, kitchens or conservatories where humidity levels may be higher.

  1. Clean Safely and Smartly

Cleaning high windows or ceiling blinds can be tricky. Always prioritise safety.

  • Use a sturdy step stool and never overreach
  • For hard-to-reach blinds, consider an extension duster or soft brush on a telescopic handle
  • If your blinds are electric or motorised, make sure they are fully extended before cleaning and avoid contact with battery or wiring components

If a deep clean feels unmanageable, it might be worth arranging a professional service for certain blind types, especially delicate or high-level installations.

Caring for your windows and blinds doesn’t have to be complicated. With a gentle approach and the right tools, you can keep them looking their best and working as they should.

Dust regularly, clean with care and always follow fabric or material-specific guidance. This way, whether you have stylish Roman blinds in your living room or high-performance Duette® blinds in your conservatory, your home will always look fresh, bright and well cared for.
